It can be difficult to travel through Turgen Gorge, but it is a very picturesque place. Turgen will open his pearl - the Assy Plateau - to those who are not afraid to go through it.

An endless plain, densely covered with green grass, extends at an altitude of 2000 meters above sea level. It rolls over the hills between the multiple channels of the Assy River, creating an amazing contrast to the blue sky and the snow caps of the mountains.

How to get to the Assy Plateau

It is a 200-km drive from the Assy plateau to Almaty, so for residents and visitors of the capital of South Kazakhstan, this is an excellent location to spend a weekend.

However, in order to fully discover the beauty of these places, it is better to set aside a few days for the tour of the Assy plateau.

First, on the way you will be accompanied by beautiful views of the Zailiyskiye Alatau mountains. Then in the village of Turgen begins the gorge of the same name;

It is through it that the entrance to the Ile-Alatau National Park passes, so halfway through you will meet a checkpoint where you need to pay an environmental fee;

On this part of the way Turgen offers rest on the bank of the river and invites you to visit two waterfalls - Medvezhiy and Kairaksky;

Near the village of Batan, the asphalt road will end, but the dirt road will lead you directly to the Assy plateau.

The secluded location of the valley provides excellent conditions for stargazing. Therefore, an observatory was built on the Assy plateau.

Unique in its kind, it is called the High Tien Shan Observatory of Kazakhstan. Unfortunately, tourists are not allowed inside due to the importance of the object, but photos against its background also look great.

The plateau is also a zhailau, a pasture for livestock, so don't be surprised if you see herds here. By the way, the Assy river valley is a great place for fishing. There are so many trout in the local waters during the season that sometimes they are caught right with their bare hands.

Assy Plateau national park tips for visitors

The weather on the Assy plateau is severe, so the valley is only open during the summer. In winter, the wind is naughty in open space, falling asleep with snowdrifts all around. Summer is rarely pleasant, and in winter it rarely rises above zero.

If you are visiting, be sure to take sunglasses and a raincoat - showers on the plateau are not uncommon for guests.
