Big Almaty Lake

Pearl of Almaty

Located in Ile-Alatau National Park, this glacial lake is a top destination for nature lovers, hikers, and photographers. Visitors are captivated by its serene beauty, fresh mountain air, and breathtaking alpine scenery.

Big Almaty Lake was formed thousands of years ago due to tectonic activity and glacial movements. Over time, melting ice created a natural reservoir, which today serves as an essential water source for the city of Almaty.

Apart from its ecological importance, the lake is home to a scientific research station and an astronomical observatory, as its high-altitude location provides ideal conditions for space research.

Because the lake serves as a drinking water source, some areas are restricted, and swimming is strictly prohibited. However, the lake remains one of the most beautiful and accessible natural attractions in Kazakhstan.
